Jewish History
היסטוריה יהודית

How have the Jewish people survived as both a national and a religious entity while many other civilizations disappeared? In our Jewish history classes, students develop a deep understanding of the history of the Jewish people within the context of other civilizations. Students study Jewish events within the framework of those other cultures, and examine the ideas unique to the Jewish people that supported our survival. Our students explore outstanding Jewish personalities, critical Jewish texts and works, and the challenges the Jewish people faced against great empires and other, often hostile world religions.

During senior year, students focus on one of the darkest eras of Jewish history in Holocaust Studies. A second semester of Israel Studies allows them to continue their learning about the Jewish people in relation to the wider world. They learn about the Jewish Enlightenment Movement and the events that led up to the creation of Zionism as a working philosophy.
