Addressing Drought through Innovation

By Lisa Guggenheimer

Associate Principal, Grades 6-8

Middle school students are tackling a timely challenge in the classroom: drought. In Ms. Gurman’s sixth grade science class, students are diving into this critical issue as part of their unit on weather and water. The topic is especially relevant to our community, with Long Island currently facing drought conditions and implementing measures like a burn ban.

To address this environmental challenge, students designed and constructed innovative irrigation systems. Each project began with detailed blueprints and models, showcasing creative solutions for water conservation. Students also wrote thoughtful explanations describing how their designs could help mitigate water shortages in arid conditions.

As part of this hands-on learning experience, students simulated dry environments to observe how irrigation promotes new growth—bringing their ideas to life and connecting classroom concepts to real-world applications.

A clear assessment rubric guided the process, motivating students to deliver their best work. We’re so impressed with their innovative creations and the effort they’ve put into tackling such an important, timely environmental challenge.
